Ray Houston grew up in a two-parent home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his mother, father, sister, and a dog named Spot. He was raised right. But raising and choosing are two different things, and at fourteen, Ray started drinking. Not long after, the drinking became something worse.

By his twenties, he'd built something real — an apprenticeship with the local painters' union, a business of his own, his first million dollars, earned one job at a time starting with two dollars in his pocket, a ladder on his back, and a sandwich his mother packed him.

Then he lost it. All of it. A spiraling addiction took hold and didn't let go for twenty-seven years. He became a single father to a one-year-old daughter in the middle of it. Then he lost his home.

This is not the part of the story where things get better. This is the part where a man is fighting a war inside himself, and for a long time, he is losing.

There's a moment in every addict's story where the story could end one of two ways. For Ray, that moment had a name: his daughter.

Watching her grow up inside the same cycle he grew up fighting was not a future he could accept for her. So he made a decision — not a single decision, but the first of thousands he'd have to keep making, one day at a time, for the rest of his life. He committed to faith. He committed to getting sober. He committed to being the father his daughter needed instead of the man his addiction had made him.

It wasn't instant. It wasn't easy. But it was the turning point everything after it was built on.

What Ray built after that decision surprised even him. He became an Independent Government Contractor, and a once-drug-addicted painter found himself trusted to complete projects for offices associated with the DEA, FBI, and then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama — the kind of trust that isn't handed to just anyone, let alone a man rebuilding his life from the ground up.

At the same time, he was raising his daughter — through high school, through college, and into a life of her own. Today she holds a master's degree, multiple professional certifications, and runs her own consulting firm helping nonprofit organizations operate better. She didn't inherit his addiction. She inherited his determination.

The rebuild wasn't just a business. It was a family, a name, and a second chance, all restored in the same twenty-seven years that once threatened to take everything.

Ray doesn't tell this story because it's interesting. He tells it because it's useful.

Every audience he speaks to — a company facing a slump, a campus full of students facing pressure, a room inside a correctional facility, a congregation looking for hope — is facing its own version of the same question Ray had to answer at his lowest point: how bad do you actually want it?

Ray teaches that four words sit behind every person who has ever turned their life around: determination, commitment, desire, and confidence — what he calls D.C.D.C. It's not a theory. It's what carried him from a homeless single father to a man trusted with federal contracts, and it's what he now hands to every audience willing to do the same work he did.
